Astronomy Night
Thu 26 Jan 2023This evening, seven of our Year 5 children and their parents attended an Ogden Trust Astronomy Night at Salesian College. There were 100 students at the event from the 10 Farnborough partnership schools.
The children started the evening in the pop-up planetarium where they went on a journey into outer space, looking closely at images of the sun, planets and stars. The ceiling of the planetarium then transformed into the night sky and the guide pointed out different constellations. The next activity was in a science lab where the children ordered planet fact cards by different criteria, for example temperature. Then they had a discussion about which planets are best and worst to live on before designing their own planet on a ball. Finally they went outside to stargaze using the telescopes provided by the Cody Observatory. While thick cloud cover meant it was hard to see any stars, they were able to see the moon in detail and also spotted Mars in the night sky.
The children had a fantastic time and were proud representatives of St Mark’s!

Chinese New Year
Sun 22 Jan 2023St Mark's marked Chinese New Year during our worships this week. We helped the children to explore the celebration of Chinese New Year through a traditional story about why the new year is given an animal name. This year being the year of the rabbit. The main theme of generosity and giving, ran throughout the week, as it is an important value in both Chinese and Christian cultures.
The children also enjoyed craft activities making dragons and rabbits!
Our challenge this week was to make someone feel special in the way that you treat them.
