RATIONALE:
Following a challenge to see if the children can make a piece of paper fly, they begin to wonder how the first aeroplanes were designed. Mrs Smith tells them that Farnborough is a very special place for aviation and this leads to the introduction of Samuel Cody, a local pioneering aviation showman. A visit to the FAST museum will begin their search for information but they decide more needs to be told about this local man and the history of aviation. So the children will set about exploring early flight, including Samuel Cody, the Wright brothers and Amelia Earhart. They will read a range of stories about flight to write a diary entry, a fact file and their own narrative. Whilst being scientists they will investigate a range of materials and choose the best ones to make their own kite. They will share all their findings in their own ‘Flying Hero Showcase’ event to parents. During this the children will be demonstrating the principals of flight in their own flying competition, showing their home learning aircrafts and their kites.
HOOK:
Mrs Smith tells the children that during the holidays she was trying to fly a kite while on holiday and it just would not fly, so we made paper aeroplanes instead! It was quite difficult to get them the right shape! The children are all challenged to see if they can make a piece of paper fly! This will then lead to a discussion about flight in Farnborough and the introduction of Samuel Cody and early flight.
We read a great book called Violet the Pilot by Steve Breen, which tells the story of Violet, a little girl who loves to invent many different flying machines from things she finds in her dad's scrap yard. This week we have been looking at letter formation and used this to label her flying machines and write a list of items she needed.
Emerald class had a fantastic trip to the FAST museum. We saw the full sized replica of Samuel Cody’s “Cody Flyer”, had a brilliant talk by the volunteers, we ventured into a real air raid shelter, explored the museum and even got to sit in the pilot seat of a helicopter! We learnt all about what an important role Samuel Cody and Farnborough play in the history of aviation and early flight.
