Let's Celebrate!
Rationale: This project focuses on celebrations from around the world and will include Birthdays, Diwali, Hanukkah, Advent and Christmas. It will provide the children with a chance to share their family's celebrations and traditions. The children will be immersed in stories, music and traditions from each celebration. As a special focus they will explore the theme of light that runs throughout each celebration. We will use what we find out to plan our very own 'Light Festival'.
Hook: Reception find Flora having a birthday party. The home corner has been decorated for her party and there is a cake with five candles, birthday cards and presents. Reception join the party to celebrate Flora's birthday.
Birthdays
We came back from lunch to find Flora having a birthday party.
We explored her party and worked out it was her 5th birthday!
We were inspired to make our own birthday decorations.
We also wrote cards and held birthday parties for Flora and our friends.
Bonfire Night
We spoke about how we had celebrated bonfire night in our families and watched a video of fireworks. We created our own firework pictures. We used chalk
and paint
to make them.
Armistice Day
We learnt about Armistice Day and what the poppy represents. We made a wreath using our hand prints. As well we took part in the whole school Remembrance worship and some of our friends gave a reading.
Diwali
We learnt about Diwali and read books about how people celebrate it. We made rangoli patterns out of colourful rice.
We used clay to make diyas.
Then we painted them.
Hanukkah
We watched a video all about how people celebrate Hanukkah. We played with dreidels.
After learning about the Hanukkiahs and reading the book 'The Ninth Night of Hanukkah', we used our hand prints to make our own Hanukkiahs.
