Flora's Adventure
Project rationale: Flora has disappeared! She has taken herself off on holiday (in her hot air balloon) to visit her family in Trinidad. The children are inspired to find out about Trinidad and receive photos and messages from Flora to help their search. Flora then announces that she now wants to explore the world! The children follow Flora on her really big adventure and discover a wealth of information about each country she visits: carefully selected by the interests and family history of the children, quality books about the world and varying environments. Together we notice the similarities and differences in the environment, animals, weather, houses, food, clothing and cultures of each country and celebrate our wonderful world.
Reception received a postcard from Flora and discovered that she had left the classroom. Flora's postcard told us she has gone on holiday to see her family in Trinidad.
We wrote our own postcards back to Flora telling her about what we did in our half term holiday. Some of us also drew the picture for the front of our postcard.
Trinidad is special to Flora as it is where her family comes from. We spoke about what places are special to us and labelled them on a map. Some people had the same special place but for different reasons and most people had different special places.
Flora has now decided she wants to travel the world. However her hot air balloon is broken. She has asked us to draw and label some vehicle designs for her so that she has some ideas for what vehicle she could make.
We have also been inspired to make our own vehicles.
Antarctica
Flora sent us another postcard to say she has travelled to Antarctica. She forgot to take a bag of clothes with her but when we opened it, the clothes were not the right clothes for Antarctica. She had packed items like a tshirt, swimming costume and shorts. We wrote a list for Flora so she knows what she needs.
We looked at the webcams in Antarctica as well as photos Flora sent. We were inspired to draw our own with crayons.
