Spring 1 - Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time

Something arrived in our classroom over lunch time. After removing the cloths, a puppet theatre was revealed!

We started performing our own puppet shows in the puppet theatre.

We then discovered some traditional tales spoon puppets and hand puppets.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Our first traditional tale was Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We read the story and made a story map. We also made porridge and spoke about healthy breakfasts.

We also experimented to see which cereal was the soggiest. You can find out more about this experiment on the Science Talk Experiments page below.

We made folding hand puppets of the characters in Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

The Three Little Pigs

Our next story was The Three Little Pigs. We read the story and learnt about the key parts by finding out what happened at the start, in the middle and at the end.

We made finger puppets of the pigs and wolf.

Some of our friends were inspired to make their own puppets. They made a mixture of folding hand puppets and finger puppets without templates.

We experimented with different materials to build houses to withstand the wolf.

We used our knowledge of joining materials to build our own buildings in the creative workshop.

We were also inspired to make cars to drive to our buildings.

Jack and the Beanstalk

We read the story and found the story language. We planted beans and are hoping for our own beanstalks!

We used our phonics knowledge to write character labels.

The Gingerbread Man

After reading the story, we spoke about the repeated phrase 'run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm a gingerbread man'. We wrote what the gingerbread man might say in our books.

We continued performing the traditional tales we have read in our puppet theatres and tried making our own stories.

We made the stick puppets for our puppet show.

Puppet show outcome

We performed a puppet show to our families. We used our stick puppets to tell the traditional tales and sing our songs.

After our puppet show we were inspired to write our own stories.

Home learning

We made spoon puppets of ourselves which we then used in our puppet show.
