How Civilised!

How Civillised - Exploring Ancient Greece and how they have shaped society

This project will explore how the citizens of Ancient Greece built a society that still has prevalence today. From early democracy to the reign of Alexander the Great, we will focus on geography, history, science and DT surrounding the Ancient world.

Geography

This geography unit will explore countries around the world by following the territorial acquisitions of Alexander the Great. Children will discuss how Alexander's reign would have affected different areas by looking at trade (imports and exports), industry, lifestyles and overall economic success. They will also explore why Alexander chose to conquer certain territories and how this could have aided his historical success.

History

Our history learning will cover the rise of Ancient Greek civilisation. We will look at everyday life, the building of democracy, Greek religion (gods and goddesses) and the beginning of the Olympic Games. At the end of this unit the children will create a Greek 'artifact' and accompanying poster about one of the units of learning to present at their class outcome.

Science

Science in this project will compare how the ancient world viewed Earth's position in the universe with the modern day. Children will discuss and complete practical learning around the position of the planets, how the planets move in our universe and the science behind time zones. We will also discover how the rotational angle of the Earth affects day and night in different areas and why the Ancient Greeks assumed that everything else revolved around our planet.

DT

To pair with our learning about innovation in the Ancient World, we will be exploring CAMS in our DT project. CAMS are used in many modern mechanics but can also be found in the ancient world. We will look at wheels, mills and ancient machinery, while designing our own moving CAMS project.
