The Book Thief
The Book Thief – Can you find where these famous folktales have been hidden around the world?
This project will explore folktales from all over the world and how they influence the area that they originated from. Focusing on geography, history and DT children will build an understanding of different countries and continents through comparing them to our own local area.
Geography
Our geography unit will allow the children to explore and compare areas from all around the world. Key learning will include following 6-figure grid references and using atlases correctly. Children will be introduced to traditional stories from Australia/New Zealand, Russia, Sweden, Japan, India, Africa, South America and England. These stories will be used to build discussion around a country's physical and human features as well as its cultural history. Children will learn to compare and contrast how geographical features can affect tourism, trade, settlements and agriculture.
History in this unit will explore the brief history of our local area and how it compares to the modern day. Children will also be challenged to draw comparisons between our local area and other studied countries.
DT
Our DT learning within this project will explore textile and sewing techniques. We will use this learning to make pivot-point puppets. Children will explore the folktale of 'Robin Hood' and design moving puppets using the story's characters as inspiration. We will practice and perfect a selection of different sewing techniques and assess which approach will be best for our designs. Children will design multiple different possibilities and complete mini-evaluations at each step of the process. The children will cut patterns for and sew their own designs as their outcome for this project.
