RATIONALE: After attending a coronation party where the children will watch snippets of the coronations of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III, the children will be inspired to find out about the role of a monarch, compare and contrast the two coronations and explore the changes from Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and King Charles III’s reign. Following this, the children will explore the lives and significance of two other British queens: Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. This will allow us the opportunity to investigate changes in different periods in Britain. After this, the children will find out about other significant individuals from around the world who have contributed to national and international achievements, both present day and in the recent past. Using a fictional story, the Queen’s Hat, the children will enhance their learning through fun themed writing such as a letter requesting help to find the hat! Fact files giving information about the significant people will be created and together this will be presented in a moving book and displayed in the school library. In order to design and make this book the children will explore how mechanisms such as levers and sliders work.
HOOK: Have a coronation celebration, make crowns, watch and compare snippets from the coronations of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III and role play being a king or queen!
