Thinking and Interdependence

RATIONALE:

Following the challenge from Bob the Alien to find out about Farnborough, the children will start to become familiar with maps. They will look at a birds eye view, make small scale maps, read, locate and label maps of the local area and the UK. They will find out about the key places, landmarks and human/physical features of Farnborough and the surrounding area, gathering information to add to their Fabulous Farnborough pack. The children will write information leaflets and directions/instructions. They will visit key places in Farnborough, and use their fieldwork and observational skills, as well as compass directions and directional language. Whilst exploring the local area on foot the children will read the book “A walk in London” by Salvatore Rubbino and use this to create their own creative guide to Farnborough. The Fabulous Farnborough pack and guide will both need to be beautifully decorated so the children will use drawing skills to include landmarks and important features.

HOOK:

Challenge from Bob the Alien – he has heard about Fabulous Farnborough…….but where is it? What is it? What makes it fabulous? He has maps but doesn’t know how to use them! His friends have given him stories about maps to help but he still doesn’t understand. What is a map? Is Farnborough a city, town or village? Which country is Farnborough in? Is there a river in Farnborough? Is it close to the sea? etc

Can we help Bob to answer the questions? What do we need to find out? How will we do this?

We have begun helping Bob by finding out about maps and learning how to draw simple maps from a birdseye view.

Learning how to orientate a map of our school grounds! Orienteering in our PE lesson!

Atlas quiz - using our Geographical skills to prove our knowledge of continents and oceans!

We have looked at human and physical features. We sorted features of the four countries of the UK into human and physical.

Learning how to program a robot to move along a set route. We found out this is called an algorithm! Just like reading a map, we had to give the robot instructions and then see if it followed them!

Map symbols - we matched the map symbols to the feature!

Walking tour of Farnborough - today we used a map to follow a route around Farnborough, on the way we spotted lots of human features, landmarks like St Mark's Church, the College of Technology, the airport, the FAST museum and the the Aviator. We stopped in at the library for a story which was kindly given to us by Bob the alien who used our instructions to find our classroom. The story was about a snail who didn't give up in her quest to reach the moon. We didn't give up on our walk either and we finished off our great morning with a play at Osbourne Park playground! A fabulous morning using our geographical skills!

Enjoying putting our map reading skills to good use by learning orienteering in our PE lesson!

Sharing our map reading skills with Year R! We really enjoyed teaching Ruby Class how to do orienteering!
