Christingle 2023

Christingle 2023

On Monday 4th December all the children spent time together making a Christingle and learning about what each part represents.

  • lit candle  - Jesus as the light of the world
  • orange -  the world
  • ribbon -  the blood of Jesus
  • dried fruit/sweets - God’s creations
  • sticks -  the four seasons or the four compass points

Christingle services are usually held in churches and schools during Advent. Advent is the four
weeks leading up to Christmas. The first Christingle was given to children in 1747 in Germany. It was a candle with a red ribbon around it. Christingle services were introduced in England in 1968. During our service we turned the lights off and lit our candles. The children were invited to join in with a special response prayer.

Thank you, Jesus, that you are the light of the world and that you have passed on that light to us through your cross and resurrection.

We are the light of Christ for the world.

Thank you, Jesus, that your light is stronger than darkness

and you have passed on the power of that light to us by your Holy Spirit.

We are the light of Christ for the world.

Thank you, Jesus, that as we pass on your light in the care we give to others, your light never dies but continues to give light to the whole world.

We are the light of Christ for the world.

In this Advent season, may your light shine brighter and brighter as we celebrate your light in us and through us for your glory.

We are the light of Christ for the world.

Amen

Thank you to all our families for donating the oranges and to the Children's Society for providing the candles, tape and bags. A donation from St Mark's has been made to this special charity to help continue their amazing work with children.
