Describing Minibeasts

Yesterday you were amazing adjective collectors and filled your suitcases with brilliant adjectives to describe 3 minibeasts. Today I would like you to choose 1 of those minibeasts and write a description of it. (Template sheets are attached below) Remember a description is like painting a picture with words. Rewatch the videos from yesterday, build a picture in your head of your minibeast, colour the picture first if you like, pretend to be your minibeast, then start writing. It doesn't have to be perfect the first time, you may need to go back and add things.

Here is an example of a butterfly description using the words from the suitcase, the adjectives are highlighted:

The colourful, orange butterfly has two symmetrical wings. She is graceful and elegant as she flies from flower to flower. Her decorated wings flap gently and her fragile antennae help her smell. The floaty butterfly has a light body and six delicate legs. She really is the most beautiful minibeast!

If you need a little more help with this writing, try adding adjectives to the sentences below:

The …………………………….. worm has a ……………………………. body.

He wriggles through the …………………………….. soil.

The ………………………….. worm doesn’t have any ……………………… legs.

He is …………………………….. and ………………………………

The …………………………… worm moves slowly along the …………………… ground.

There are 2 other short activities today, a minibeast classification game and a dot to dot snail. (Both attached below) Please do the writing first then you won't run out of energy!

Spelling/Phonics

Year 1 – “ee” sound using “y” (This week’s tasks were sent on Monday)

Please also watch Letters and sounds for home and school on Youtube each day. Year 1 day 3.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP_FbjYUP_UtldV2K_-niWw/featured?disable_polymer=1

Year 2 – suffixes less and ly (This week’s tasks were sent on Monday)

Can you think of 5 more words which can use the suffixes less and ly that are not in your spelling list this week? Does the root word need changing before you add the suffix?

Remember you can also use ideas from the “Spelling Menu booklet” to practise your spellings throughout the week.

Describing Minibeasts

Words used to describe are called adjectives, we used them last week in our poem. (Powerpoint reminder below) Today we are going to try and describe our minibeasts by being an awesome adjective collector. First watch the film clips of the butterfly, dragonfly, ladybird and worm. (attached here)

Now use the suitcase templates to collect your adjectives. First close your eyes and think about how the minibeast looked, imagine how it felt and how it moved. Can you fill your suitcases with adjectives? Mrs Smith has done the first one for you! (Templates and word banks attached below)

We will be using these suitcases tomorrow to help us with a piece of writing!

  1. The Pitfall trap

The National History Museum is closed at the moment but they have lots of lovely activities. This is one I thought we should try………. making a pitfall trap. You submerge a small plastic cup/yoghurt pot into the ground and see which minibeasts drop in. It is a way of seeing many different minibeasts that you might not find on a traditional bug hunt. Click on the link below to watch the video which explains the technique. There are also some beautiful photos of insects on this page.

https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/how-to-make-pitfall-trap-to-catch-insects.html

Mrs Smith will make one today as well and post of video later of what I find!!

   2. Labelling parts of the insects

Although there are many ways that insects are different, there are a few characteristics they all have in common. Insects are invertebrates, which means that they do not have a backbone.

All insects have three parts to their bodies: the head, the abdomen, and the thorax. They have two antennae on their head and have six legs.

Watch the powerpoint then choose which insect you would like to label and colour. Can you find the 3 main parts of the body? (Insects and powerpoint is attached below)

3. Insect Photography -  Look at the stunning photos by photographer Levon Biss of insects extremely close up. Click this link: microsculpture.net/   Click the 3 lines on the top left of the page and this presents a menu and all the photos are underneath the menu. Click on each one to enlarge.

You might be inspired to draw one of these insects from the photographs, look at the details and colours. They are incredible!

We're going on a bug hunt

We’re going on a bug hunt!
We’re going to catch some big ones.
What a sunny day.
Are you ready? OK!
Oh my! A bee! A black and yellow bee. Flying over flowers, BUZZZZ
Oh my! A ladybug! A red, spotted ladybug, Crawling through the grass, SHHHHH
Oh my! A grasshopper! A big, green grasshopper Hopping around the tree, BOING BOING
Oh my! A butterfly! A pretty, orange butterfly, Floating in the sky, WHOOSH, WHOOSH
Oh my! A spider! A big black spider, Creeping on ME! CREEP…CREEP… SCREAM

Now we would like you to create your own version. Choose 4 or 5 minibeasts you found on your bug hunt. Write their names on a piece of paper and choose 2 words to describe them eg red, spotty (adjectives) then choose one thing they do eg crawl (verb). Use these to add to your own poem using the template below and the word mats. A reminder of adjectives and verbs are shown. When you've finished your poem you can decorate it with the minibeasts you chose!

Monday 20th April 2020

Welcome back Year 1/2, we hope you have all had a good holiday and are ready to start our new project which is……………..

Bugs, bugs, bugs

Science

“The sun is in the sky and it’s a lovely Spring’s day. The minibeasts have seen you and they want to come and play!”

Our new project is all about minibeasts but which one is your favourite? Let’s spend the next few weeks finding out all about them, their bodies, where they live, what they eat and how they grow. Then we’ll be able to decide which is our favourite minibeast!

Listen to the story below.......

If you can't get outside, watch Mrs Smith's bug hunt and make a note of what I found!
