The Book Thief!
Rationale: The children in 5/6 receive a letter from Hampshire Library Service explaining that due to lack of interest i n reading, all school libraries must lose 25% of their fiction library: a blow to St Marks as the school library as the children of the school love reading. Using their creative skills, the children will show the error of this opinion culminating in a series of new stories (written by 5/6) for the library and a series of author displays. To do this, the children will research and read a variety of children’s author’s books improving higher order reading skills. By comparing styles and genres of author, the children will focus on improving individual writing skills in the following ways: plan quickly and effectively the plot, characters and structure of their own narrative writing, investigate how dialogue is used, form complex sentences, investigate connecting words and phrases for paragraphs. To ensure their books fit into our school library and are appealing, the children will investigate the top ten children’s illustrators and find inspiration to create their own front covers and illustrations
