A moment in time!

Well the last 18 weeks have certainly been ones we will never forget! It is a moment in time that will be written into the history books. To mark this we would like you to spend some time today and tomorrow making a time capsule. All the instructions are explained below. This will be your contribution to history and you will be able to say “I was there!”

Can I also take the opportunity to say what a privilege it has been to receive your work at the end of each week since half term. You have all worked so incredibly hard and it makes me smile opening every email with your wonderfully creative ideas, powerpoints, recordings, videos and photos, it has all been AMAZING! You are all AMAZING! (and so are your wonderful families for helping you!)

Well done St Mark’s – you are all true sticks of rock!

Sports Galore!

Next week would have seen the start of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This week you are going to celebrate sport and on Friday we will hold our very own virtual House Sports Challenge. This will include children at home and at school! Listen to today's podcast to find out a little more!

Where does our food come from?

Where does our food come from?

Share the Field to Fork powerpoint below, where is food produced and how we can find out? Where did your breakfast come from? Investigate your own cupboards and fridge (with permission from an adult!). Choose 6 items and look at where they were grown or manufactured. Record these items in a chart.

Food miles

What are food miles? Why should we worry about food miles?

Share the powerpoint and answer the “think” questions contained in the powerpoint.

Calculating food miles

How do we calculate food miles? The previous powerpoint demonstrated this, using "as the crow flies" measurements. Choose one of the maps follow the activity for calculating food miles.

Investigate which foods are in season at the moment. Are there foods which can not be grown in the UK?

Meal Challenge

Can you make a meal (breakfast/lunch or dinner) from an ingredient grown or produced in the UK? What is the ingredient? Where in the UK did it come from? Take a photo of the meal.

Good morning Juniors, here's your project for this week. I really hope you enjoy being architects. I can't wait to see your skyscrapers at the end of the week!

Architecture – your views

Look at the photos of different buildings and answer the “Think” questions. What are your views about these buildings?

What is an architect?

What does an architect do? What methods do they use? How has architecture changed?

Great architects through time

Share the powerpoint and then become an architect detective and research the 3 great architects mentioned in the powerpoint. Discover other buildings they designed and record in a fact file. (Template attached below or create your own)

The London Skyline

Look at the 2 photos of London, 10 years apart. How has London’s skyline changed? Research a famous London building of your choice, find out who designed it and why it was built.

Skyscrapers and the world’s tallest buildings.

Share the powerpoint. Research other skyscrapers and tall buildings. Find 6 pictures and compare them. What features do they all have? How are they different?

 Then design your own skyscraper. Consider balance and stability in your design. What will it be used for? Which country would you build it in and why? Why would your design be effective? Draw a detailed labelled diagram of your design. (If you were feeling very creative you could even try making a model of it!!)

Finally write an explanation of the design to accompany it. Use the posters attached below to help you recall the features of an explanation text. This should be a detailed report!

Perfect Pirates

Firstly a huge well done for an incredible effort last week with your inventions! I was amazed at how many different things you thought of! A selection of your work is on the website to share. Look at the pirate photos and answer the “Think” questions.

Pirate Pack Book

This is an ebook full of pirate facts and information. Take the time to read it carefully, ask an adult to help you if needed. Make notes to help you recall interesting facts. Then try the following tasks.

Who am I?

Read the clues and try to work out which pirate job it is referring to.

Pirate vocabulary

Discover the meaning of these pirate themed words! Can you say them aloud? Can you use them in a sentence?  Can you sound like a pirate?

Famous pirates

Name the pirates and then match the facts about them.

Perfect Pirates

Imagine you are the pirate captain. Design your own ship. Draw and label a detailed design. Give your ship and yourself a name. (Watch the powerpoint below to see different types of pirate ships)

On board your ship you will need:

A set of rules (written just like instructions – numbered or bullet points. Remember to use imperative verbs (bossy ones!) there is a powerpoint to help remind you!)

A unique flag (each captain had their own design – explain why you chose this design)

A map (to show where they were going and what they hoped to find! Coloured and labelled)

Final treat – fizzy pirate coins!

Try this quick science investigation by making yourself some buried treasure which magically appears from inside rocks!!

Dragon's Den - Inventors and Inventions

Welcome to the first project for this half term! Each project will last for 1 week. Please email completed project work to Mrs Smith at yearoneandtwo@st-marks.hants.sch.uk at the end of the week. Look at the pictures of 8 everyday items. Which is the most important? Rank the items and then justify your choices.

Look at the pictures of 5 crazy inventions. Choose one and label it. What does it do? How does it work? Explain!

Dragon’s Den Task – become an inventor!

Design your own invention – you can use the invention generator to help if you need ideas! (attached below) Draw a detailed and labelled diagram.

Write a detailed explanation of how your invention works. (This should be at least half a page!)

“Pitch” – imagine you are in the Dragon’s Den and are pitching your invention. Write a persuasive speech about your invention. (This can also be recorded!)
