This half term Year 1/2 are focusing on Traditional tales, finding out about our local hero, Samuel Cody and of course doing plenty of Maths! Look below at all the things we have been enjoying!
A great start to our week with some excellent story writing, retelling the story of Goldilocks and the 3 bears. Audios of the stories will be uploaded soon!! Also Year 1 have been telling stories too but in Maths - they were telling stories to explain taking away, we found out the big word for taking away is "subtraction". We have looked at modern flight and compared it to flight in Samuel Cody's time. We came to the conclusion that flying was much safer now than it used to be!! We have really enjoyed learning about Samuel Cody, our local "Flying Hero"!
In RE we have really enjoyed exploring the Bible and we shared a wonderful afternoon looking at God's treasures given to the world. We chose our favourite treasures and added these to large treasure chests!
Another busy week in Year 1/2! Our week begun with our wonderful HARVEST service. This is the first time we have held a virtual service. Each class contributed in their classroom and it was streamed live into other rooms via TEAMs. Year 1/2 read a beautiful poem and your contributions of food and supplies were AMAZING! Well done children!
We have started a new traditional tale this week - Goldilocks and the three bears. Year 1 have enjoyed making puppets to help describe the characters whilst Year 2 have used their "awesome adjectives" to write excellent descriptions. In Maths we have continued to look at number, focusing on bonds and fact families. Did you know there are so many ways you can make 20? Also this week we compared a very old map of Farnborough from 1908 to a modern map of the area. We even looked at Goggle maps and found the airport and out school. We decided that Farnborough had many more fields and trees in the time of Samuel Cody.
This week we found out about the different planes that Samuel Cody made and flew. We made our own booklets showing the planes and then spent time looking in detail at the structures and sketching them. In maths we have been busy working on bonds to 10 and counting in 2/5/10 and 3's! The adventures of the Gingerbread Man continued with "Wanted Posters", a newspaper report and even a retelling of the story.
We like to keep busy in Year 1/2!
Another busy week in Year 1/2. We found out all about Samuel Cody's flighting machines which included a man lifting kite! We tried out our skills at kite making too! We are waiting for a "dry" windy day now so we can fly them.
Also this week we began the story of the Gingerbread Man. We had lots of fun joining in with the repeated phrases and ordering the characters. During maths we have tackled more partitioning and worked on number bonds. We have also had much fun outside during our PE lessons. We are learning to control the ball, stop, change direction, bounce, throw and catch. We are getting much fitter too!
This week we have a new arrival to our classroom! Our class goldfish, Geraldine, was joined by a new friend. This new companion is a white and orange goldfish, called Dave! After learning about friendship, the children quite rightly decided that Geraldine was lonely and needed a friend. They are doing very at looking after them and always remembering to feed them before we go home.
In English this week we have spent a great deal of time finding out about adjectives and writing some marvelous descriptions of the troll from the Billy Goats Gruff tale. The children were incredibly inventive with their selection of words. During Maths we have worked hard on place value, learning to use the greater than and less than signs and ordinal numbers. We also found out about timelines this week, and constructed one for all the important events in Samuel Cody's life. We have had another busy week, full of exciting learning and it is wonderful to see the children rising to new challenges.
We have had a very busy week! We started by sharing the story of the Billy Goats Gruff. The children have retold the story using puppets and acted out characters with masks. They have enjoyed sequencing the story and making storyboards. In maths we have focused on number work, looking at counting and place value. Also this week we have found out about Samuel Cody, who was the first person to fly an aeroplane in the UK and it took place right here in Farnborough! The children made paper aeroplanes and organised facts about this forward thinking pilot! We have also enjoyed lots of time outside in the glorious weather and practiced our PE skills. Well done Year 1/2, it's so lovely to see you all enjoying being back at school and settling so well into our new class.
