Autumn 1 2019
This project celebrates a new beginning at St. Mark’s and focuses on getting to know each other and building relationships. After becoming settled and familiar with the classroom rules and routines a new member of the class arrives. His name is Austin (an orangutan) and he is unsure how to behave at school. The children are challenged to teach Austin how to become a responsible, kind and friendly member of the class. They will make a ‘How to’ guide explaining all about ‘Reception’ and how to have a fantastic start to St Mark’s, where Reception do indeed 'Rule!'
What excitement we had this morning when Mrs. Stocchetti phoned us from the playground! She was all in a fluster as she had suddenly seen a mysterious object arrive in the playground and she didn’t know what to do! She asked for our help as there was a note and a basket but there was something moving inside. We raced outside to find a hot air balloon basket had landed! We crept quietly towards to basket, feeling quite nervous....we tried to guess what was inside...nervously we read the note, ‘Please look after this orangutan!’ We slowly pulled away the canopy and there, fast asleep, was an orangutan!!! Yikes! Mrs Stocchetti gently took him out and he woke up....he was very shy but soon he began to talk to Mrs Stocchetti and he said he was called, Austin....he didn’t have a family and was all alone. The children were very quick to reassure him that they would look after him and he could be part of the St Mark’s family. Austin became very excited and started to nibble some of the children’s jumpers!!! ‘Oh dear,’ we thought. Mrs Stocchetti seemed to think that we might need to teach him some manners and how to behave at school! So we agreed to teach Austin all about our St Mark’s values and to look after him....after he had been properly risk assessed by Mrs Watson of course!
